Songs in *French* for Language Learners

Why Songs?

Songs can be a great way for language learners to acquire language. This page has six songs to help your child learn French. It is important that leaners be able to understand the meaning of each songs. Each song here is either very simple, already familiar to many children in English, or both.

Very Simple Songs in French

This song features the numbers in French. It is a great place to start for children who are already counting their mother tongue.

Parents will be forgiven for being tired of hearing “Baby Shark,” but most children know the song and it teaches basic family members in French.

Familiar Songs in French

“Old MacDonald” gets a new last name in French, Mathurin. Children can learn farm animals with the song “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” in French, “Dans La Ferme du Mathurin.”

Most children know “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and there is a French version available as well.

The “Wheels on the Bus” also has a French version, as well as “If You Are Happy and You Know It.”

“Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes,” “Wheels on the Bus,” and “If You Are Happy and You Know it,” all have gestures which are great for children to use to reinforce the meaning of the songs.

Classic Songs in French

There are several classic French children’s songs which children may enjoy. These include: Le Petit Escargot, a simple cute song about a snail, and Ah Les Crocodiles which is more complex. The lyrics are in the video.
